What to Do with Food, Liquids, and Houseplants During a Move
Transporting personal items, dishes, and household appliances is often easier than safely moving food, liquids, or houseplants. Want to ensure these sensitive items are transported without unexpected issues? Follow these expert tips from Best Moves.
How to Transport Food Items
Try to avoid purchasing perishable foods right before moving day. If you already have some in your fridge, use them up, give them to neighbours, or donate them to a local charity.
For dry goods and canned food, prepare the appropriate packing materials:
- airtight zipper-seal bags or tightly closed plastic containers;
- bubble wrap to protect glass jars;
- soft packing paper to fill empty space inside boxes.
Spices in small glass jars should be transported in boxes with dividers. If you don’t have dividers, you can create your own using pieces of corrugated cardboard.
How to Transport Liquids
Make sure all bottles are tightly sealed — this applies not only to oils, sauces, and juices, but also to household products such as laundry gel, fabric softener, and shampoo.
To protect glass bottles, wrap each one in bubble wrap. This provides cushioning and prevents breakage.
To avoid accidental leaks and damage to your belongings, place liquid containers inside airtight zipper-seal bags.

Pack bottles vertically inside the box and use dividers so they don’t touch one another. Finally, label all boxes clearly, indicating the contents.
How to Protect Houseplants During a Move
Houseplants require extra attention, especially during the winter months. They are sensitive to low temperatures, so proper protection is essential. Here are some helpful tips:
- Place each plant pot in a separate box.
- Fill the space between the stem and the box walls with soft packing paper to keep the plant stable.
- Make a few small ventilation holes in the box.
- Use blankets to provide insulation from the cold.
- Do not cover plant boxes with plastic wrap — condensation will form inside and may cause damage.
Whenever possible, transport houseplants in your own vehicle. If that isn’t an option, you can entrust them to a moving company along with the rest of your belongings.

Important: Do not unpack your plants immediately after the move. Bring them into a warm room and leave them inside their boxes for a few hours. Sudden temperature changes can harm them.
