5 Things You Should Definitely Do a Week Before Your Big Move

When there’s only one week left before your relocation and most of the preparation is already done, it’s time to finish the remaining tasks. What exactly should you focus on? Read on. Best Moves is happy to share some practical tips on how to prepare for moving during the final week.

      1. Schedule a Deep Clean

Hire a cleaning company to professionally clean your new home before you arrive. It’s important to:

      • have carpets cleaned,
      • wash curtains and other textiles,
      • make sure all rooms are fresh and ready to use.

Contact the cleaners in advance to book their services — once your boxes and furniture fill the space, a proper clean will be much harder to do. Besides, it’s always easier and more pleasant to settle into a home that’s already spotless.

      2. Get Rid of Unnecessary Items

By this point, you’ve likely sorted, organized, and packed most of your belongings. If you still come across items you won’t need in your new home, use this last week to let them go:

      • donate to charities,
      • give to neighbours or friends,
      • sell what’s in good condition.

Worn-out clothing, broken appliances, and old furniture are best taken to a recycling or disposal facility. The fewer unnecessary things you move, the cheaper and simpler your relocation will be.

      3. Defrost Your Fridge

Food that doesn’t require special storage conditions, such as canned goods, can be packed in separate boxes and transported with the rest of your belongings. Perishables like meat, vegetables, and dairy products should be used up before moving day. If you have extras, consider giving them to neighbours.

Make sure your fridge and freezer are empty and clean:

      1. Turn them off and let the ice melt completely.
      2. Wash all surfaces.
      3. Wipe everything dry with a towel.

Leave the doors slightly open for a while so that moisture doesn’t accumulate and mould doesn’t form inside.

      4. Confirm Utility Connections at the New Address

During the last week before your move, contact your landlord or property manager and confirm that:

      • electricity is on,
      • heating is working (if applicable),
      • water supply is active.

If something hasn’t been set up yet, reach out to utility providers and arrange connections in advance. Also contact your internet provider ahead of time.

Make sure all service contracts are properly arranged so that you don’t run into extra difficulties after the move.

      5. Create a Plan for Moving Day

Call your moving company to confirm:

      • the exact arrival time of the movers,
      • when the moving truck will be at your current home.

Pack a bag of essentials that you’ll need right after the move, such as:

      • bedding,
      • toiletries,
      • a change of clothes for each family member,
      • basic chargers and medications.

Also double-check your folder with documents (ID, lease agreement, insurance, etc.). Ideally, this folder should stay with you at all times during the move.
